When the global airline fleet was parked in March due to the COVID Pandemic, our customers told us that one of their major challenges was to find a fast and cost-effective way of preserving their engines on-wing.
Traditional exhaust covers are very large and hard to handle and most airlines do not have them in stock. Foam-plugs are a great solution if you have them available. However, they are expensive and they take up too much storage space. Alternatively, rolls of plastic film and packing tape can be used to seal up an exhaust.
These have been the materials of choice for many airlines as they are readily available and relatively inexpensive. The downside with this last option is that often ends up being the most expensive one for operators as it can take upwards of 90 minutes for two mechanics to tape up an engine exhaust – and that’s on a good day!
It was these “pain-points” that led us to develop our approved FLASHPLUG® solutions in collaboration with Airbus.
It takes less than 10 minutes for a mechanic to fit the FLASHPLUG®, It weighs a mere 700 grams and can be folded into a tiny package for future use in the fly-away kit. It can be reused multiple times after engine run-ups and it will withstand the harshest of weather conditions. Best of all it is that it is no more expensive than a roll of plastic (which ends up in landfill after a single use).
